"Good day! You've reached Whitley Schnee, CEO of the Schnee Company in Genessia. I'm unable to speak at the moment, but leave a message and I'll respond with all due haste. Thank you, and have a wonderful day!"
[ Whitley, having done literally nothing wrong, is absolutely baffled at the explosive accusation - he shrinks back a bit, eyes wide and a bit nervous as he tries to compose himself to answer. ]
I-I'm not sure what you're referring to, father. Honestly, I have no idea! Who is Strauss?
[Oh, he's going to try to lie about it? Like that'll work.
He bangs his fist on his desk.]
Don't you lie to me! My secretaries were whispering about it in the office today. If they know about it, then the whole city does! What have I told you about public scandals?
[ He winces at the gesture, fingers tightening their grip on the desk in front of him as if trying to keep himself stable by sheer strength alone. ]
Whispering about what? Father, whatever this is, it isn't true! I've done nothing but uphold the integrity of our family name from the day I set foot in this place! I would never compromise it!
Whitley, I need someone to brainstorm with and I know you dislike her but you're also good at getting people to like you so do you have any idea how I can get Winter to not be mad at me for disagreeing with her when she's ignoring me because I did?
[ Look, no one else here really knows Winter besides their father (who is the worst person) and General Ironwood, who she doesn't feel comfortable asking. ]
Also: do you want to try kebabs with me for lunch tomorrow? I've been learning to grill vegetables.
[ She's not going to poison him with grilled meat though, she's still trying to figure out how to get the meat fully cooked without it being a brick and hasn't quite found that balance. ]
[ As in, Whitley saw that post and went for a Do Not Engage policy. There was nothing for him to gain from it, after all, so it seemed best to just steer clear. From the sound of things, he was right! ]
Truth be told, I'm not sure. I've never dealt with Winter in a mood like that, so I don't exactly have experience. For what it's worth, however, I don't think you should be the one seeking her forgiveness.
[ ... ]
As for kebabs, I'm not sure if the sight of you working at a kitchen would put me into cardiac arrest.
I appreciate that. I have no problem apologizing when I think I'm wrong but even after thinking about it, I really don't think I am. I also really don't like it when she's not talking to me.
[ She's internally crying because Winter is mad at her. She doesn't like Winter being mad at her. Why don't you have answers Whitley. ]
I'll have you know I can handle a number of dishes in the kitchen. I can manage baked chicken, chocolate chip cookies- which if Ruby shows up you are not allowed to inform her of, blanching vegetables, fruit salad and a couple of fish recipes. And basically anything that doesn't actually require cooking like salads and sandwiches. Also don't tell father but outside of the Bunny Poof Cafe now, I make the best coffee in Genessia out of sheer need because there wasn't anyone decent for so long.
[ She's gone native, Whitley. She can even do her own laundry. ]
We were to meet after she completed her bounty three hours ago. She has failed to respond to her communicator as well. It is not like her to be tardy, especially without giving notice.
I will ask Father. Thank you for responding promptly.
I'd have to agree. That's very unlike her. Perhaps contact her friends as well - I'd wager that they'd know anything before Father caught wind. She isn't exactly open to speaking with him.
[Jacques looks rather comfortable in the backseat of his town car. Everything had gone according to plan and soon Weiss would be back in the palm of his hand. He’s barely able to keep the smug expression off his face.]
Whitley, I just wanted to inform you that Weiss will be unreachable for some time, but you shouldn’t worry; she’s in the best of care.
[SIGH. Of course she got his answering machine. Much as she wants to fuss and rant, she doesn't. He probably got busy with the cooking contest and forgot, so she'll just helpfully give him a little nudge. There must be some love there for Maribelle or he wouldn't have bid so much on her.]
Hey, Whitley! It's me, Minako. Sooooooo, I was just talking to Maribelle and she said she hadn't heard back from you yet about your auction date, so I took the liberty of setting something up for you! I know your schedule is pretty busy, so if you need to make an adjustment, I'll leave you the number of the restaurant. You've got a table for two to enjoy brunch and high tea at this ritzy place in Attleton called Bruschella's, Saturday at 11 a.m. Super fancy, I think you guys will like it.
Thanks again for covering the bid. That was really kind of you. Hope you guys enjoy your date! Give me a call after it's finished, let me know how things went! Okay, here's the number and address.
[ It took her a while, but she figured out that the person she'd intended to call on her whiteboard was, in fact, Whitley. The fact that she'd forgotten left her deciding to write it out instead. If she forgot in the middle of writing, she could just read what she already went through and fix it. It'd be better. More cohesive, anyway. ]
Whitley,
I know you don't want to get in the middle of what keeps going on between Father and I. I know you don't want to pick sides. I won't ask you to.
Whatever happened that landed me in that institution it wasn't my choice. I've literally died and refused to give up my memories, I wouldn't agree to anything that would take them away. I have a therapist; she wasn't informed, there's no way I would've agreed to it without her. Sun has a security video of him bringing orderlies to sedate me so I couldn't fight. I don't remember a lot of it and I'm having trouble remembering some things now, but I watched the video.
Be careful around him. Let me know if you need help. We can even come up with a code like just texting ! for emergencies. You're always welcome at Sun and my house if you need to get away.
[Before leaving for work that morning, Jacques had left a few gift-wrapped boxes on the table with a card addressed to Whitley with the following message inside:
Happy birthday son! So proud of the man you've become.
Love, Dad
P.S. I'll be coming home from work early tonight to take you out to dinner. There's a new crepery in town with fantastic reviews.
If the card alone doesn't confuse the crap out of him, the gifts might. While some of them are things like suit clearly in Jacques taste or a classy pocket watch, some of them contain a handheld gaming system and a few games with an attached note that says "Don't forget to take some time for yourself!"
Most notably, however, is the envelope with a simple bow on it. It contains what is by far the riskiest game Jacques is playing. He knows that Whitley and Weiss talk, and if this news gets to her? It should help him tremendously in his efforts to lull her back to him. While Weiss wasn't supposed to find out that Whitley was just the decoy CEO, this would make her believe without a doubt that he's a changed man.
Inside the envelope is all of the paperwork which fully transfers the ownership of the Schnee Company (the one in Genessia, not the one back in Remnant) to Whitley, the terms clearly stating that it is his to do with as he pleases and that Jacques will not intervene at all unless Whitley asks him to. There are no loopholes in the fine print - this is the real deal. All it requires is Whitley's signature saying that he accepts and the company is his.
The only reason he's making this gamble is because he still believes Whitley to be his pawn, that should something happen and he ask Whitley for the company back, he would hand it over like the loyal son he's always been.]
Hi Whitley. Don't watch Cloud's post, I'm fine. If you already did, I'm at the hospital and very much alive, if you were concerned. I will hold it against you if you have someone send flowers instead of visiting me yourself.
[ He did that thing again, where he gets so caught up in business that he shuts the network off to focus his attention on numbers and spreadsheets. Maybe not as malicious as his father, but problematic all three same. ]
I didn't see it. I'm sorry.
I can be there within the hour if you're up for a visitor or two.
I'm fine for visitors, I'm just in here for observation at this point. Dr. Caine doesn't want to risk infection since the dream docks aren't medically sanitary even if I was healed.
[ She's not so sure about back home but she can explain that when he gets here. ]
Video
Whitley! What's this about you and this.. [ the hell was her name? ] Strauss girl?! I expect that kind of behavior from Weiss, but never from you!
[Really now, you think he'd at least of had the class to lose it to someone of standing.]
Video

[ Someone hasn't caught wind of his own rumor. ]
